Morning Back Pain Cures

Morning back pain is a problem for many people who may not have back pain during the day, go to bed fine but wake up to a stiff and painful back. The pain will usually lessen during the day but if it continues then you should seek medical advice. What causes morning back pain and what can you do about it?

What causes morning back pain?

The first thing to do is to check your bed. Is it old and sagging in the middle? This could be a cause of your morning back pain. If your bed is fine then you will need to look for other causes.

If you are not sleeping well your muscles will not relax properly during the night and may be held in an awkward position which causes strain. As many as two thirds of people with morning back pain have sleep problems. If this is so with you then there are some techniques that will help you to sleep better.

Another cause of morning back pain is dehydration. Alcohol before bed is a major cause of dehydration as is coffee and other caffeine containing drinks. Avoid these and drink plenty of water before you go to bed. Dehydration results in the blood failing to deliver enough oxygen and nutrients to the muscles which can result in muscle spasms.

How to lose the back pain in the morning

Stretch your body before going to bed. Pilates or yoga exercises are great for this. They will also help to improve your posture which can also help alleviate back pain. Stretching the muscles before bed will help them relax properly.

Before you get out of bed do some stretching exercises. Roll into a fetal position, hold for a few seconds, relax and repeat. this will stretch the spine. Next, lying on your back pull the knees up but keep the feet on the mattress. Move legs to one side then bring them back to the center, relax then move them to the other side. Repeat a few times.

Don’t jump out of bed but roll slowly with the legs to one side and gently get out of bed. Jumping up in an upright position will put strain on the back and neck muscles.

Move slowly and gently and stretch as tall as you can. A hot shower can also help to relax tense muscles.
