Hydrogen Peroxide Teeth Whitening

Hydrogen Peroxide teeth whitening is a popular and safe method that has been used for many years. Although teeth tend to get darker with age they also become stained by coffee, red wine and smoking. We all want to have a radiant smile so if your teeth are stained or not as white as you would like peroxide teeth whitening may be a good option.

At home teeth whitening methods

The usual form of peroxide used is hydrogen peroxide (a combination of oxygen and hydrogen) which has oxidising properties and is safe to use and has been approved by the American Dental Association. I will only work on natural teeth not on crowns or bridgework. It can be used at home or by your dentist. Many people use a hydrogen peroxide mouth wash using a solution of 2-5% hydrogen peroxide after you have brushed your teeth. It will take some time to have an effect but is probably the easiest method. You could also combine this with an at home teeth whitening gel applied with trays or teeth whitening strips. For a longer lasting effect use a teeth whitening toothpaste as well. Check out our review on Teeth Whitening Products Crest 3D White Whitestrips.

At the dentist teeth whitening methods

Your dentist will be able to so teeth whitening for you which will be much quicker than doing it at home. He may also use a loght activation method to accelerate the process. It can however be fairly expensive but is the safest and most effective way to bleach your teeth.

Tooth and gum sensitivity

Any bleaching method can make your teeth and gums more sensitive so if you already have sensitive teeth you may wish to discuss this with your dentist first. At home teeth whitening treatments do not usually provide any gum protection although a new method called opalescence whitening uses a thicker gel that you put on your teeth and can keep away from your gums. This may be a good option if you have had any problems such as periodontal disease in the past.

Conclusion

Peroxide teeth whitening is safe and effective but always make sure you consult your dentist if you have any issues with sensitivity and follow instructions on at home teeth whitening products carefully.
