Manic Depression | Bipolar Disorder

A lot of people will feel sad sometimes, especially when something bad happened to them or their close friends & family. Feeling sad is a very normal reaction but sometimes people are not able to snap out of it and they will get depressed. You are depressed when you feel really sad for at least 3 months and it has a bad influence on your functioning in social life. Most of the time patients are not able to go to work or meet their friends. They will loose or gain a lot of weight and sleep will be greatly impaired as well. Almost 20% of all Americans will experience depression once in their lives. A disorder very similar to depression is Bipolar disorder. Patients with bipolar disorder will not only experience periods of depression but will also experience episodes of mania.

Almost 2% will experience Bipolar disorder also known as Manic Depression. There is no cure for it which means that once you have it, you have to find a way to cope with it for life. Luckily there are ways how to reduce the symptoms and almost 70% of all patients is able to find a way to cope with bipolar disorder.

The most important thing to do is be faithful to your medication treatment. You have to take your medication the rest of your life if you want to keep control of the symptoms. Often the problem is that patients don’t like taking them and are looking for a way to skip them. Especially when you don’t feel sick it feels weird to take your medication. But once you stop them you will have no control in becoming manic or depressed.

That is why patients will also get cognitive therapy from a psychologist or psychiatrist. Cognitive therapy is aimed at helping the patient to understand what their disorder is and how they have to cope with it. The importance of medication is also explained and this helps patients to remain faithful to their treatment.
