Cure Bad Breath with the Food You Eat

Just by eating the foods mentioned in this article you can have fresher breath right away. Imagine that – good eats for good breath! Let’s get on with the list.

Herbs

Parsley is claimed to be a helpful home remedy in the fight against bad breath. Other herbs known to be equally effective are coriander, eucalyptus and spearmint. Also believed to serve the same purpose are cardamom, rosemary and tarragon. You can either chew on these or steep some sprigs in boiled water and take it in as a drink, or wait for it to cool and use as a mouthwash. If included in salads and other recipes, eating these herbs can help in better digestion.

Yogurt

Yogurt is a nutritious food that is also a known traditional cure for bad breath and recent studies already support this belief. Yogurt eaten on a daily basis can help decrease the amount of hydrogen sulfide vapors in the mouth which causes the unpleasant odors. The good bacteria in yogurt prevent the buildup of plaque and can aid in fighting gum disease. Probiotic yogurt also contains beneficial bacteria to help digestive health. Yogurt also contains vitamin D which prevents the growth of bacteria in the oral cavity. Others believe that lactose intolerance can lead to bad breath so yogurt (and kefir) serves a twofold purpose in being a healthy alternative to milk and in addressing halitosis in the lactose intolerant individual.

Fresh Fruits and Vegetables

Eating apples, celery and carrots also aid against foul-smelling breath. Apart from increasing the amount of saliva which rinses out the mouth, these chewy foods also help to physically scrape plaque from your teeth and tongue, which aids in having fresher, cleaner breath.

Fruits rich in vitamin C such as berries make the oral environment unfriendly to the halitosis-causing bacteria. Vitamin C also promotes healthy gums, preventing gingivitis a condition that can lead to bad breath.

There you go – some food suggestions that are not only nutritious but are also potent and practical in your fight for fresher breath. It is up to you to try these alternatives and determine which works for you. These are supplements, not replacements, to regular daily oral care routine of brushing, flossing and mouth rinsing.

In addition, it is also noteworthy to mention that bad breath may be due to an underlying health condition for which medical attention may be necessary. This article, informative as it may be, is not meant to be a substitute to consultations with your health-care practitioner for the appropriate medical diagnosis or treatment.
