The Health Benefits of Pomegranate Juice
The bark of the pomegranate tree and the fruit rind has been a popular remedy for thousands of years for the relief of diarrhea. intestinal parasites and dysentery. Juice of the pomegranate and the seeds have been used a a heart tonic and, in the Ayurvedic system it is used to offset the ill effects of an unhealthy diet. The tree bark, juice and rind have also been used to tone the skin, stop nose and gum bleeds. It is even reputed to be useful for firming breasts and to treat hemorrhoids!
So, in our modern world, is there any proof that pomegranate juice, rind, seeds or the bark of the tree is effective as a remedy?
What about the nutritional content of the pomegranate?
The seeds of the pomegranate contain unsaturated oils and fiber and the juice is a good source of vitamin C and Vitamin B5. It also contains high levels of vitamins A and E and folic acid as well as antioxidants.

The Health Benefits of Pomegranate Juice
Many claims are made for the health benefits of pomegranate juice but do they stand up to scientific investigation. There have been some studies conducted in the laboratory on cells (in vitro) but very few properly conducted trials in vivo. In some studies pomegranate juice was found to be effective at reducing some factors linked to heart disease and in a small study blood pressure was reduced slightly. There are also some indications that pomegranate juice may be effective against some viral infections.
The FDA has not approved any claims for health benefits of pomegranate juice although some manufacturers continue to make unfounded claims. The high levels of anti-oxidants may be beneficial in the prevention of cardio vascular disease (CVD). The American Heart Association supports the view that foods rich in anti oxidants as well as a diet containing vegetables, fruits and whole grains can reduce help the occurrence of CVD.
Conclusion
To date there is a lot of speculation about the health benefits of pomegranate juice but little substantiated facts. However it does seem clear that pomegranate juice is a good source of nutrients and it’s anti-oxidant properties are beneficial. Drinking fruit or vegetable juice for health is always a good idea and the nutrient content of pomegranate juice is well known and proven.
