Azelaic Acid for Acne and Rosacea Treatment

If you have acne or rosacea your dermatologist may prescribe a cream or lotion containing azelaic acid. it is a topical medication that has proved effective for treating mild or moderate acne and the redness that is caused by rosacea. It works by clearing the pores and preventing the bacteria from developing antibiotic resistance. Unlike some other acne medications, azelaic acid has no effect on oil production so does not dry out the skin. It is not usually the first medication used for acne control but is useful if other methods have not been effective.

For those with rosacea, azelaic acid has been shown to effectively reduce redness and lesions associated with this condition. It does not work instantly but you should see some improvement in about 4 weeks. It has anti-inflammatory properties which help to lessen the redness and anti-microbial properties to kill bacteria. It can reduce the papules and pustules often seen with this skin condition.

Are there any side effects from using azelaic acid?

Some people may experience itchiness or irritation and if you have darker skin, hypo pigmentation can be a problem. You should not use a preparation containing this ingredient if your skin is damaged in any way,for instance by sunburn or a wound or is chapped and irritated already. You should also avoid using any harsh cleansers or other products on your skin while you are using azelaic acid skin products. You should also talk to your doctor if you are pregnant or nursing as insufficient tests have been carried out to ascertain the safety of using this preparation during this time. Side effects are usually mild and temporary but if they are more severe consult your doctor who may decrease the amount and times that you use it or suggest a different treatment..

How should you use an azelaic acid preparation?

Topical creams and gels should be applied twice a day avoiding the eyes, the lips and any areas of broken skin. A thin layer of cream should be applied to dry skin. Keep the skin uncovered after application.

Conclusion

Azelaic acid is a useful alternative if you find that the usual medications for acne are not working for you. It is also a very valuable addition to rosacea skin treatments. You will need to use it for at least four weeks before you see any improvement so don’t give up when it does not work instantly!
