Choosing a Spine Surgeon

When faced with the prospect of having to get surgery, it can be hard to muster up the will to really do the work of making sure you get the best care. There might be a fear and a resistance to delving into all the research and statistics on the procedure you are going to undergo, and it might feel easier to just go along with what the professionals tell you. Unfortunately, this is not a wise approach. Surgery is not an exact science and many variables are involved. You want to increase your chances of having a positive outcome, and that means taking the responsibility of finding the best spine surgeon possible.

How do you know who the best doctor is? There’s no official ranking system, but word of mouth is a good indicator of a doctor who does good work and truly cares for his patients or a doctor who is the opposite. If you can’t find anyone who has a spine surgeon to recommend, you will have to go through other channels to determine the quality of his work.

First, does the surgeon predominately do spine surgeries in his practice? Not all surgeons do. Devoting at least 50% of a practice to performing spinal surgeries is also an indication of a doctor with experience and expertise. In terms of formal study, some surgeons have completed just a normal surgical residency and perform many types of general surgeries. You will want to find a doctor that has completed at least an extra year of work focusing on the spine, as this doctor will have more knowledge and expertise in the area.

Finally, and very importantly, you want to find a doctor that really cares. He should have the time and patience to sit down with you and make an effort to ease your worries by explaining things to you so that you can understand, as well as answering any questions you may have. If you do the research, you should be able to find a good spine surgeon who can be a help for your back pain.
